The Noon Gun is a large cannon which is fired at 12h00 every day of the year (except on Sundays and public holidays).
First used in 1806, it and its backup cannon are the oldest guns in the entire world that are still in daily use.
Signal Hill Cape Town was used as a point from which signal flags could be flown to communicate with ships nearing Cape Town harbour, therefore the name 'Signal Hill'. The flags were used to communicate weather warnings, to aid in navigation and anchoring.
Signal Hill Cape Town and Lion's Head Mountain together resemble a crouching lion and Signal Hill is sometimes also known as Lion's Rump and therefore during the summer days, Signal Hill is also a popular paragliding launching point.
Other attractions in the area include Table Mountain the nearby, historically rich Bo-Kaap where you can enjoy a fantastic meal or late afternoon cup of tea at the Noon Gun Tea Room in Longmarket Street.
